Game of Thrones: Who Will Serve the Realm? (Part II)

The final half of the final season of Game of Thrones is upon us and we’re all wondering the same thing: Who wins the game?

Each week, I’m going to do a theme recipe for each of my guesses for who will sit on the iron throne in the end. Since I’ve planned these out in advance, it’s entirely possible that all six of these guesses will die before their post goes live. I hope that’s not the case, but bearing that in mind, I’ll be ordering my posts by most likely to die to least likely to die. Sadly.

If you guys want to see me make these recipes live, tune into www.twitch.tv/fontinaturner. I’ll be cooking on Saturday and posting the recipes on Sunday.

Anyway, let’s dig in.

<SPOILERS, DINGUS>

My second recipe is for Gendry. Gendry Baratheon, even. Here’s my defense for that:

  • I’ve read some theories that Gendry is the legitimate son of Robert and Cersei. He’s obviously Robert’s son and in the book it is said that his mother was a blonde woman though not much more is known of her.
  • There’s also the whole scene where Cersei tells Catelyn of her first born and how he died but they took him away and she never saw him again. Is it possible that that was Gendry and they took him away but he wasn’t dead?
  • There was a glorious meetup with him and Jon Snow, who as we have discovered, isn’t a bastard. There was that whole Stark/Baratheon dynamic. But it would be super interesting of that dynamic changes to a Targaryen/Baratheon dynamic.

If that’s not enough to think that Gendry might end up on the throne, then you cray. That being said, this week’s recipe honors the hard-working blacksmith, himself. Hammered and iron-seared steak and blackened and blue potatoes. After all, “He’s just stupid. He likes to polish helmets and beat on swords with hammers.”

Gendry “Hot Stuff” Baratheon

Hammered & Iron-Seared Steak with Blackened and Blue Potatoes

steak
2 new york strip steaks, trimmed
1 tbsp coarse sea salt
t tbsp garlic powder
1/2 tbsp black pepper
1/2 tbsp dried oregano
1/2 tbsp dried sage
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1/4 cup butter

potatoes
1 lb small potatoes
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne
1/4 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground pepper
6 oz blue cheese

Preheat oven to 400°F. Wash potatoes and cut them all in half. Place them in a large, shallow baking dish. Mix together the spices. Cover the potatoes in the olive oil and the spice mixture. Stir to coat. Bake for twenty minutes. Stir. Bake another twenty minutes. Remove from oven and toss in blue cheese crumbles.

While the potatoes are baking, prep the steaks. Place them between sheets of saran wrap and pound thin, 3/4″ – 1″ thick. Mix spices together. Sprinkle one side of the steaks with half the mixture. Melt the butter in an iron skillet. Once it is melted, lay the steaks spice-side-down in the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle the rest of the spice mixture on the naked side of the steaks. Flip and cook another 3-4 minutes.

Serve steak with potatoes and pray to the seven that Gendry survives this season.
