Skinny AF Chicago Dog

Skinny AF Chicago Dog

I know, I know. Labor Day means the end of summer. But I’m pretty sure you can have hot dogs whenever the hell you want. I’m kind of obsessed with hot dogs.

Side note and unsponsored plug for a place I really love: there’s a great hot dog place in Philly on 17th street called Underdogs. If you’re in the area, check them out.

When I’m not on 17th street, there’s a chance I still want a hot dog in my mouth. One of my all time favorites is the Chicago Dog. So much flavor packed onto a bun. And so classic that I have to bow to it.

Do you know how bad hot dogs can be for you? SO many calories. Sometimes it’s totally worth it and I work them into my nutrition for the day. But when I want one and I don’t have an extra 750 calories to spend on it, this is the perfect option. The Skinny as Fuck Chicago Dog. It has TONS of food because of all those low calorie toppings, gives you the satisfying hot dog you’re looking for and doesn’t totally train-wreck your day. The Chicago Dog is perfect because it traditionally comes with all that shit on it already. All we have to do is cut calories, fat and carbs from the hot dog and the bread. Easy peasy.

So here you go, fill yourself up with some weenies.

Skinny AF Chicago Dog

The Skinny AF Chicago Dog
1 Hebrew National 98% Fat Free All Beef Hot Dog
1 hot dog bun
1/8th tsp poppyseeds
2 tomato small wedges
1 kosher dill pickle spear
2 sport peppers
diced onions
green relish (and a drop of green food dye if not neon enough)
yellow mustard
celery salt

Weiner duty. Boil it. Grill it. Microwave it. Do what you want. I’m going to boil it.

Bun duty. Hollow it out. Stick your fingers in there and hollow out the center and throw all that bready goodness in the trash*. Next, flip it over onto a plate (dug-out-side-down). Brush it with a little water and then sprinkle it generously with poppyseeds. Set it in the microwave next to a little cup of water. Microwave on 50% for 5-10 seconds.

Toppings! Ok, tomatoes on one side. Pickle spear on the other. Sport pepper on each side. A healthy squirt of mustard, a nice flopping down of some relish, sprinkle with onions and celery salt, deep breath and VOILA!

*A note about the bread. Hollowing it out save you about 30 calories. If you want a little more structural integrity in your bun, that’s what it will cost you to keep it. Also, you could buy sandwich thins, and use a half one as a bun. It’s not as much bread, but will save you 70 calories.

Hebrew Nats rock! Quite possibly one of my favorite dogs. Last week we had them pan grilled to extra crispness and I even went to the trouble of buttering and grilling the bun. Topped with sauerkraut and mustard. Simple and delicious. It was all about the layers of light crispness this time around. I like em boiled too.

I need to check out this Underdog place. Sounds stellar. Are they quick on the draw? It’s an 8 block walk for me, so I need to use my lunch hour wisely.

Mmm, I love Kraut! Underdogs is great. They are pretty fast. I’m about 10 blocks away, sometimes I hop a bus. 🙂 I’m on a mission to try them all. You get your name on the wall if you do. Haha 🙂
